What Starts Stacking Up After 100,000 Miles on a Honda, Toyota, or Subaru Crossover

A Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, or Subaru Forester reaching 100,000 miles is not automatically at the end of its useful life.

Quite the opposite. With good maintenance, these crossovers can have plenty of useful driving left.

But 100,000 miles is often when something changes for the owner:

Maintenance stops being about one item at a time.

The vehicle is older. Rubber components have been through years of heat cycles. Fluids have accumulated mileage and time. Suspension parts have absorbed thousands of bumps. Spark plugs, belts, hoses, brakes, wheel bearings, and drivetrain fluids may all be at different stages of their service lives.

Nothing magical happens at exactly 100,000 miles.

What starts happening is that several different needs can begin stacking up at once.

That is why the service history becomes more important than the number on the odometer.

100,000 miles is not one universal maintenance package

There is no single “100K service” that correctly applies to every CR-V, RAV4, or Forester.

Honda uses its Maintenance Minder system on many newer vehicles to identify service needs based on operating conditions and vehicle use rather than simply applying one identical mileage interval to every car.

Toyota publishes model-specific maintenance guides with inspections and services scheduled by mileage and time.

Subaru likewise publishes maintenance schedules and instructs owners to continue periodic maintenance beyond the earlier scheduled intervals.

So when a 105,000-mile crossover comes into Chuck’s Auto Repair – Shoreline, the important questions are not just:

“What does a car need at 100K?”

They are:

  • What has already been done?
  • What has never been done?
  • Which engine and drivetrain does this vehicle have?
  • How old is the vehicle?
  • How is it driven?
  • What condition is it actually in?

That is where the real maintenance plan comes from.

Spark plugs may be entering the picture

Spark-plug service is one of the items owners often associate with higher mileage, but the interval varies by engine and model year.

On applicable vehicles, long-life spark plugs can remain in service for many tens of thousands of miles before replacement is due.

By the time a crossover is around 100,000 miles, the question should be:

Were the spark plugs already replaced when required, or are they approaching their scheduled service point?

Worn plugs can contribute to poor combustion, misfires, difficult starting, reduced performance, or additional stress on ignition components.

But we do not recommend replacing plugs simply because the odometer crossed six digits.

We check the vehicle’s actual maintenance requirements and history first.

Fluids can start overlapping

This is one of the biggest reasons maintenance feels different after 100K.

Your crossover does not have just one fluid.

Depending on configuration, it may have:

  • Engine oil
  • Engine coolant
  • Brake fluid
  • Automatic transmission fluid
  • CVT fluid
  • Rear differential fluid
  • Transfer-case or other AWD drivetrain fluids

Those fluids do different jobs and do not necessarily share the same service interval.

A Subaru Forester with all-wheel drive has a different drivetrain layout from a front-wheel-drive Honda CR-V.

A RAV4 Hybrid has different components and service considerations from a conventional gasoline RAV4.

A Honda with a CVT needs the correct fluid and service procedure for that transmission.

That is why “change all the fluids at 100K” is not a good maintenance strategy.

The better approach is to determine:

what is due, what has already been serviced, what condition matters, and what applies to that exact vehicle.

Cooling-system age begins to matter

At higher mileage, cooling-system maintenance becomes more important because the cooling system is responsible for controlling engine temperature every time the vehicle runs.

The system includes more than coolant.

It also relies on components such as:

A vehicle can have perfectly normal-looking coolant and still develop a leak elsewhere in the system.

Likewise, replacing one cooling-system component does not automatically mean everything else needs replacement.

Around 100K and beyond, we pay closer attention to age, leakage, hose condition, coolant history, temperature behavior, and the vehicle’s specific maintenance requirements.

Belts and hoses have lived through a lot of heat cycles

Mileage tells only part of the story for rubber components.

A ten-year-old crossover with 95,000 miles has still spent ten years exposed to:

  • Engine heat
  • Cold starts
  • Seattle temperature changes
  • Oil vapor
  • Moisture
  • Vibration
  • Repeated expansion and contraction

That is why belts and hoses deserve inspection as vehicles age.

We’re looking for things like cracking, glazing, swelling, softness, contamination, leakage, or deterioration around connections.

Again, inspection matters more than blindly replacing every hose because the odometer hit 100K.

Suspension wear becomes easier to find

Shoreline roads are not especially kind to suspension components.

Over enough years and miles, potholes, pavement joints, curb transitions, speed bumps, and ordinary road vibration add up.

Around and beyond 100,000 miles, it becomes increasingly common to find wear involving parts such as:

  • Shocks or struts
  • Control-arm bushings
  • Ball joints
  • Sway-bar links
  • Tie-rod ends
  • Wheel bearings

That doesn’t mean all of those parts need replacement at 100K.

It means this is the mileage range where a good inspection becomes increasingly valuable.

A worn suspension part can develop gradually enough that the driver adapts to it and doesn’t realize how much the vehicle’s ride, steering, or tire wear has changed.

Wheel bearings don’t have a scheduled replacement mileage

This is an important distinction.

Wheel bearings are generally condition-based repairs, not normal 100K replacement items.

A bearing may last well beyond 100,000 miles.

Another may develop noise or looseness earlier because of design, road impacts, contamination, or normal wear.

Typical concerns can include:

  • Humming or growling that changes with road speed
  • Noise that changes when the vehicle is loaded during a turn
  • Play or looseness found during inspection

The correct approach is diagnosis.

We don’t replace a wheel bearing because a Honda, Toyota, or Subaru reached a certain mileage.

Brakes may be on their second—or third—chapter

By 100,000 miles, the vehicle may have had brake work once already.

Or several times.

Or surprisingly little, depending on how it has been driven.

That is exactly why maintenance history matters.

A brake inspection should look beyond simply asking how old the pads are.

Depending on the vehicle, we may evaluate:

  • Remaining pad material
  • Rotor condition
  • Caliper operation
  • Brake hardware
  • Brake-fluid condition
  • Parking-brake operation
  • Uneven wear
  • Noise or vibration

The fact that brakes were replaced at 70,000 miles does not tell us what condition they are in at 108,000.

The actual inspection does.

AWD systems add another layer

This is particularly relevant to many Subaru crossovers and AWD versions of the CR-V and RAV4.

All-wheel drive adds components whose service needs should not be ignored simply because the engine is running well.

Depending on vehicle design, there may be:

  • Rear differential fluid
  • Transfer components
  • Additional seals
  • Driveshaft components
  • AWD-specific inspection items

Tire condition also matters on AWD vehicles.

Significant differences in tire circumference can affect drivetrain operation on some systems, so proper tire sizing, wear, inflation, and matching are important considerations.

The exact requirements vary by vehicle.

The transmission deserves its own maintenance history

One of the first things we want to know on a 100K-plus crossover is:

Has the transmission or CVT fluid ever been serviced?

Honda, Toyota, and Subaru use different transmission designs across different years and models.

That means there is no universal “100K transmission flush” recommendation that belongs on all three.

The correct fluid matters.

The service procedure matters.

Previous maintenance matters.

And if the transmission already has a drivability problem, changing fluid is not a substitute for diagnosis.

At this mileage, having a documented history is far more useful than simply knowing that the vehicle “had some fluids changed once.”

Small oil leaks can start appearing

Age and heat cycles also begin showing up in seals and gaskets.

A small seep is not the same thing as a major oil leak.

And seeing oil underneath an engine does not automatically tell us where it came from.

At higher mileage, we may find leakage around areas such as:

  • Valve-cover gaskets
  • Oil-pan sealing surfaces
  • Timing covers
  • Cam or crank seals
  • Oil-filter housings or related components

The exact patterns depend heavily on the engine.

The important part is to identify the source before recommending a repair.

The timing belt question depends completely on the engine

This is another area where generic 100K advice gets people into trouble.

Some Honda, Toyota, and Subaru engines use timing chains.

Some older or specific engines use timing belts.

The service requirements are not interchangeable.

If the vehicle has a timing belt, its replacement schedule should be determined from the manufacturer’s requirements for that specific engine and model year.

If it uses a timing chain, that does not mean the entire timing system is maintenance-free forever.

But it also does not mean the chain should be automatically replaced at 100,000 miles.

Configuration matters.

What actually makes a 100K vehicle expensive?

Usually, it isn’t one giant event.

It’s deferred maintenance.

Imagine a crossover arrives at 112,000 miles with:

  • Original spark plugs
  • Unknown transmission-fluid history
  • Old brake fluid
  • Two leaking struts
  • Cracked control-arm bushings
  • A weak battery
  • Tires nearing replacement
  • A small cooling-system leak

None of those items necessarily happened because the odometer passed 100,000 miles.

They simply accumulated over time.

That’s the real meaning of “things start stacking up.”

The best way to avoid being surprised is to identify those needs early and prioritize them.

A maintenance plan for someone preparing to replace the vehicle next spring may look different from the plan for someone who wants to drive their CR-V, RAV4, or Forester to 180,000 miles.

100,000 miles should be a planning point, not a panic point

A well-maintained crossover reaching 100,000 miles isn’t automatically a problem vehicle.

But it is a good time to stop thinking about maintenance as isolated oil changes and start looking at the whole vehicle and its history.

The goal is not to replace everything.

The goal is to know:

What is due now?
What is beginning to wear?
What can wait?
What should simply be monitored?

That makes the next 50,000 miles much easier to plan.
